Did you know that Germany is not just about beer and cars? From medieval castles to Cologne Cathedral built over 600 years, from Oktoberfest to the Black Forest — here are 15 facts you probably didn't know.
- Germany has 1500 varieties of sausages (Wurst) officially registered. Bavarian Weißwurst must traditionally be eaten before noon.
- Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to build (1248-1880). The world's tallest twin-spired cathedral (157 m), it survived 14 bomb hits during WWII.
- Germany has 1000+ varieties of beer and the Reinheitsgebot — the Beer Purity Law from 1516, the oldest living food regulation in Europe.
- Berlin is 9× larger than Paris by area (892 km² vs 105 km²), but with half the population. Hence Berlin's famous parks and open spaces.
- Autobahns without speed limits — about 70% of motorways have no limit (130 km/h recommended). It's the only developed country with such a policy.
- Neuschwanstein Castle inspired Disneyland. Built by "mad King" Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869. Disney used it as the model for the studio logo.
- Oktoberfest starts in September. The Munich festival lasts 16-18 days, ending on the first Sunday of October. About 7 million litres of beer are consumed annually.
- Germany has more zoos than any other country — over 400. Berlin Zoo (1844) has the most species in the world (1500+).
- Brandenburg Gate was a symbol of division of Berlin for 28 years (Wall 1961-1989). It stands 200 m from the former "no man's land".
- Germany created aspirin (Bayer, 1897) and invented the diesel engine (Diesel, 1893), MP3 (Fraunhofer, 1995), and printing press (Gutenberg, 1440).
- The Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is 200 km long. The Brothers Grimm collected fairy tales here. Origin of the cuckoo clock — first built in 1730.
- Germany has 47 UNESCO sites — third place in Europe after Italy and Spain.
- The Reichstag has a glass dome open to the public free of charge. A symbol of democratic transparency — visitors walk ABOVE parliament.
- German "Sonntagsruhe" = mandatory silence on Sundays. Shops closed, ban on mowing lawn, doing laundry, loud music — it's law, not custom.
- Berlin Wall was 155 km long with 302 watchtowers. Today only ~1.5 km remains — mainly the East Side Gallery with artistic murals.
